It takes a Community to Work Wonders for Kids
Working Wonders exists because of a local grassroots initiative of parents, educators and business leaders. In 2002, the organization formed a board of directors and received its nonprofit status. With a grant award from the City of Bend Arts, Beautification and Culture Commission, Working Wonders was able to design and construct their first exhibit, Passport to the World. For the next year, close to 200 volunteers and community organizations, such as the Art Station and Bend Science Station joined in to help bring this traveling exhibit and others to community festivals such as Summerfest, Munch-n-Music, and Cascade Children’s Festival. As a ‘Museum Without Walls,’ Working Wonders served over 25,000 kids and grownups!
It didn’t take long for Central Oregon to embrace the concept of hands-on learning. As more and more people experienced Working Wonders, the demand for their exhibits and activities grew. In January 2004, Working Wonders began to design, plan and raise money to move into a 4,400 square foot space in The Shops at the Old Mill District. With funding from local individuals, businesses and foundations; and tireless help (painting, sanding, spackling, swingin’ hammers – you name it) from dedicated board members, staff and volunteers, the museum celebrated its grand opening on September 30, 2004.
