For Parents & Caregivers

At Working Wonders Children’s Museum kids find their nitch without much nudging, but you may be wondering where you, as a grown-up fit into it all. In fact, your role is crucially important to your child’s early learning. Children learn best when given the opportunity to explore through hands-on play in rich environments WITH other children AND supportive adults. Just think of yourself as your child’s play guide. This job requires that we shed our adult thinking and try our best to remember what it feels like to be curious and playful.

A few things to keep in mind as you support your child’s early learning through play are: 1) follow their lead, children are master players and incredible leaders, 2) observe them in their play to learn more about who they are and what they are interested in, and 3) extend their play by asking open-ended questions to encourage their problem solving skills and playful inquiry.  If you can practice these few things you will be well on your way to mastering play again!
